Fine Arts Department
Mission of the Fine Arts Program
“The painter has the Universe in his mind and hands.” ―Leonardo da Vinci
Our Fine Arts department gives students direct access to the powerful world of images, beauty, and pure creation.
Fine Arts track students develop a solid foundation in the visual arts, gaining a deep understanding of the great aesthetics passed down over millennia of human civilization in both the West and the East. These aesthetics, along with the discipline, creative thinking, and bold initiative they require, lay the foundation in fine arts for college studies in both arts and non-arts majors.
Why Fine Arts?
Painting, drawing, sculpting, printmaking—using your hands, eyes, and minds in a directly creative way—develop abilities in the mind and body that have application for the rest of one’s life. Engagement in such art forms is proven to increase fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills.
More than that, artists are capable of creating images that give meaning to life and are capable of stirring the hearts of individuals and the masses. They can quite literally create the mark of quality and culture. Without a computer screen and internet, artists are capable of summoning a world of images and ideas that have no limit—perhaps it’s what da Vinci meant by “the Universe.”
Conversely, within a world of computer screens and internet, images are more important than ever. Northern Academy’s Fine Arts track provides a foundation for successful college studies that lead to careers that are now in high demand, such as graphic designer, digital illustrator, online publisher, web designer, and animator.
More broadly speaking, the artistic sense and skill provided by the Northern Fine Arts track are also in demand now more than ever before because of the internet and increasing ease in the publishing industry. Such artistic sense and skill provides a foundation that aids in the visual aspects and design judgment that are necessarily part of almost any 21st century profession.
Life in the Fine Arts Track
Fine Arts track students get to work in a professional-caliber fine arts studio with award-winning artists teaching and mentoring them. They also have a unique opportunity to study fine arts from both the Western and Eastern traditions. In this vibrant environment, they discover their creative strengths and improve foundation-level artistic skills. Faculty place an emphasis on moral character that is part and parcel of achieving academic and artistic excellence.
Every afternoon, Fine Arts track students attend fine arts training courses and elective courses, such as Drawing, Painting, Graphic Design, Sculpture, Printmaking, Chinese Calligraphy and Painting, AP Art History, AP Studio Art, and Fashion Design. The fruits of their diligent artistic pursuits are displayed on The Art Gallery Wall—an achievement in building confidence and social interaction.
All applicants need to follow the general admission process and also need to scan and email:
